WELCOME
TO IPOH CITY
Ipoh City, the capital of Perak State,
was once the centre of Malaysia's once
thriving tin industry. With a population
of 600,000, it is the third largest
City in Peninsular Malaysia, encompassing
137.5 sq. km under its jurisdiction.
The
evolution of the Ipoh City Council can
be traced back to the 1890s when Sir
Frank Swettenham, a British Resident,
started the Ipoh Sanitary Board. As
one of the main centres of economic
activity in the State, Ipoh soon attracted
a growing population. This was further
accelerated when Ipoh became the centre
of the State administration when Malaysia
achieved independence from the United
Kingdom on 31st August 1957
With
the growth of the population, and the
need to provide wide-ranging regulatory
activities to the growing population,
Ipoh was elevated to a Town Council
on 31st May 1962. On 27th May 1988,
Ipoh was finally accorded City Status.
With
the nation moving towards a knowledge
economy, Ipoh City follow suits with
the conceptualization of a Smart City
Project where its services to its population
would be based on e-Government principle
i.e. Information Dissemination, Information
Communication and Transaction of services
to citizen, businesses and within government
departments.
Based on the framework of using ICT
to promote productivity, Ipoh City has
adopted the ICT channel to deliver its
services to the public, facilitate a
better environment to promote business
and development, and improve the productivity
of its employees.
Ipoh City is well on its way to becoming
Malaysia's first 'Smart City'
